Is there an official website?
Yes, at www.enemyterritory.com.
FEATURES
How about a weather system?
Some maps will take place at daytime some at night, you will be fighting in rain, snow and during deserts storms. Will those conditions change during a map? No idea.
Will there be a single player mode?
No, Enemy Territory: Quake Wars will be a team based multiplayer FPS game only.
Are bots planned for Enemy Territory: Quake Wars?
There is no official statement about Bots, but John Dean (known from the Fritz Bot Mod) is working at id Software.
A Bot implementation could be possible.
What about training missions?
There will be a build-in solo missions system while you're playing on a server. Think of it as class specific secondary mini objectives, like disabling enemy defences, enemy radars or reviving a teammate. A popup will appear on the HUD letting you know what you are supposed to do. This way you will get to know the game while helping your team to achieve victory.
Fireteam leaders can assign those mini objectives manually to their fireteam members.
Do player models reflect their health or ammo status?
All items carried by a player are visible on his uniform. When a GDF teammate has no more clips left you will see that there are no more clips on him, on the model that is. When a Strogg is low on health his pack is half empty. A shader system has been created to add or remove certain things from models to ensure a more realistic approach.
Is there a voice chat like the one in Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory?
Yes, the voice chat is back allowing you to quickly send out commands or requests by simply pressing a key. The number of those messages is not clear, but it should be pretty much the same amount as in W:ET (70+).
How many maps are planned to be in the retail version?
There should be 12 maps. The size of them is optimized for 24-32 players. Each campaign consists 3 maps.
What is the maximum number of players on a map?
64 is the highest number that was mentioned.
GAMEPLAY
What gamemodes will there be in Enemy Territory: Quake Wars?
The main gamemode - Objective based teamplay like in Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory. One team is defending one attacking. The attacking team has to complete certain objectives to win the map. The defending team has to stop them. All maps have a different story and different objectives. A series of maps (generally three) is one campaign.
For professional gaming there will be a stopwatch mode. The goal is to beat the enemies time. In the first round one team is attacking then in the next round the sides switch and the other team attacks and tries to beat that time.
Will there be any unlockable weapons or items?
No, it's not fair for a new player to fight someone who has some super-hyper-mega weapon unlocked because he has been playing the game for a while.
How can I distinguish an Infiltrator in disguise?
If you see a fellow soldier with cybernetic stuff on his skin - kill it.
How often do players spawn?
The spawn will probably be slightly different for each map with a longer spawn time for the defending team. Spawn timers will be set at around 20-30 seconds. The Strogg Meditek can setup a spawn point in the body of a fallen enemy. When spawned players are invincible for 5 seconds. The 5 seconds are slightly lowered for revived players and Stroggs which spawn from a spawn host.
In what type of terrain will the action take place?
You will be fighting in the desert, in the jungle, in canyons and on snow covered arctic territory. The January Issue of Computer Gaming World even mentions urban combat but this wasn't mentioned anywhere else.
How and when can I change my class?
Like in Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory after selecting a class it will be changed at respawn. In Enemy Territory: Quake Wars you can also change your class in your teams mobile command center.
Will the be any experience points?
A similar system is planned as the one in Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory. While playing you gain rewards for different tasks in form of experience points. You keep those until the end of a campaign. It's not clear yet what you will gain from those points, probably things like faster reloads, more health or maybe more ammo. No global ranking system is planned.
What forces will there be in Enemy Territory: Quake Wars?
The Global Defence Force (GDF) and the Strogg. Those two forces have completely different models, weapons and abilities.
How many classes will there be?
Each team gets a set of 5 different classes. Every class has it's own unique abilities, items, tools and objectives. For more information on player classes please visit the Player Classes Page
What the heck is Stroyent?
Think of it as mana or fuel for the Strogg. It will increase your health if you're wounded or resupply you with ammo, it's up to you how you use the stoyent you got. The only class in the game which can gather and distribute stroyent is the meditek.
What weapons will there be?
For information on weapons please visit the Weapons Page
What vehicles will there be?
Wheels, ammo packs and other objects can be shot to disable a vehicle. For example destoying one of the Anasi Gyrocopter's engines will reduce it's maneuvarability greatly.
Details on the vehicles can be found at the Vehicles Page
Will I be able to drive and shoot at the same time?
Yes, for the vehicles that have weapons that is. In Enemy Territory: Quake Wars there is a feature called Driver Consent. It gives the driver the ability to drive and use the weapon but with a limited sight. Another player is able to shoot at a 360 degree angle. You will be able to choose if you would like to allow another player to be the gunner or if you would like to take care of it by yourself. The third player in the vehicle gets a command console which helps the others to identify the enemy.
What about 3rd person view?
3rd person view is available when in vehicles and when calling in deployables.
Will there be real-time weapon switching?
Yes, Splash Damage are planning to include that next-gen feature.
TECHNICAL
What engine is Enemy Territory: Quake Wars using?
The almighty DOOM 3 engine featuring the MegaTexture™ rendering technology and rewritten network code.
What is the MegaTexture™ rendering technology?
New tech that avoids tiling or repeating thanks to the ability to create one big texture (32000 x 32000 pixels) to cover the whole map. A developer can create a 6GB texture that uses only around 10MB of video memory and around 20MB of system RAM. This texture has also information on what type of ground there is at some place on the map. This results in different behavior of vehicles and players, different sounds or traction on certain parts on the map. All those details are stored in this one huge texture.
Will there be HDR in Enemy Territory: Quake Wars?
Negative. But a technique has been implemented that looks like HDR but doesn't sacrifice your system performance.
Were there made any changes to the network code?
Yes, the netcode has been completely rewritten. One of the new features is something called Area of Relevance. It is something like a level of detail system seen in graphics engines where the quality of a texture very far away can be reduces saving system resources. Area of Relevance works in a similar way by reducing the information send to you to only those relevant. For example the number of ammo clips on a teammates uniform who is a couple miles in front of you is not important since you won't be able to see those clips anyway. This information won't be send to you reducing the overall bandwidth usage.
Will there be per-pixel damage allocation?
Till now it wasn't mentioned in any interview or preview, but it's doubtful.
Can shadows be disabled to gain better performance?
This is not known yet, but disabling shadows might not be a good idea since the shadow of a hiding enemy can give away his position.
It seems that Enemy Territory: Quake Wars will be the first DOOM3 engine based title that will introduce self shadowing. So a players arm will draw a shadow on his legs like it would be in the real world. This isn't and essential feature when it comes to gameplay but it definitely adds a huge amount of realism.
How about VoIP?
It's all there.
Will tools for modders be included in the retail version?
An editor will probably be build into the game. Like for other id titles the SDK will probably follow shortly after the release of the retail version. No exact details are known yet.
Will there be a CD and/or DVD version?
Enemy Territory: Quake Wars will be released on DVD, not on several CDs.
Will PunkBuster be integrated in Enemy Territory: Quake Wars?
Yes, PunkBuster support is planned.
Will there be support for analogue controllers like joysticks or gamepads?
Yep, analogue controllers will be supported.
How big is the ET:QW beta going to be?
